On September 19th, half a dozen dedicated team members traded in their usual routine for gloves and trash bags. This year on International Coastal Cleanup Day, we showed up for Negril’s coastline representing the Green Team. From the boatyard to the seafront, the team helped care for a coastline shared by guests, staff and the local community.
Learning Through Action
The team spent the day paired with students from nearby schools, creating many moments for big conversations about litter and clean beaches.
Bags filled quickly as volunteers on the Green Team scanned the grounds. Students are very excited to get back to swimming, “without seeing bottles” along the shore. At the end of the day, the lesson is simple: a cleaner beach gives everyone something to come back to.
One Coastline, One Community
As the team got closer to the water they met up with volunteers from other resorts, as well as the Kiwanis and the Lions Club. This cleanup grew from a small team’s effort to spending a day with the community. Protecting Jamaican coastlines is easier with some help, and even easier with some friends. Keeping Jamaica’s beaches beautiful takes more than appreciation. It takes people willing to pitch in.
