Environmental Policy

Sunset at the Palms recognizes that our business has an important role to play in protecting and enhancing the environment for guests and the residents of Negril, Jamaica.

To this end, our hotel is committed to taking actions:

  • To achieve sound environmental practices across our entire operation and maintain a continuous commitment to improved environmental practices​
  • To comply fully with all environmental laws and regulations​
  • To minimize our use of energy, water and materials of scarce supply​
  • To minimize the amount of air emissions, wastewater effluent, solid wastes and hazardous materials associated with our operations (or pollution generated)​
  • To invite our customers, suppliers and contractors to participate in our efforts to protect and enhance the environment​
  • To work with others in the tourism industry, public agencies and the community to achieve wider environmental goals
  • To provide all employees with the training and resources required to meet our environmental objectives​
  • ​​To openly communicate our policies and practices to our employees, guests and interested parties
  • To monitor and record our environmental performance relative to our policies, objectives and targets​
  • To give special consideration to the employment of persons living in nearby communities, for both construction and operational activities

Environmental Best Practices

Energy

  • Monitoring and recording on a daily basis the property consumption of electricity, diesel and LPG
  • ​​Use of LED light bulbs
  • ​Ensuring all refrigerator and freezer doors are equipped with airtight seals
  • ​Labeling of refrigerator items to reduce search time and using carts to transport food in and out so doors are not left open any longer than necessary
  • Reducing the running time of Jacuzzi pumps
  • ​Turn off lights, air conditioning units and computers in unoccupied areas

Water

  • Guests and Staff are encouraged to conserve on Water
  • Training of Staff to identify and report leaking or malfunctioning toilets and pipes.
  • ​​​Monitoring and recording on a daily basis the property consumption of Water
  • ​Equip garden hose with nozzles to irrigate plants and lawns
  • ​Minimize water usage by only wetting grass instead of soaking soil between 6am and 10am to minimize wasteful evaporation

Solid Waste

  • Composting of landscape waste and using homemade compost in our gardens
  • ​Garbage is separated in the kitchen. Fruits and Vegetable Waste is placed in a separate container and given to local Pig Farmers in the community of Green Island, Hanover
  • Cooking oil is recycled
  • Use both sides of paper for photocopying of documents
  • Reduce the use of disposables; such as plastic bags, plates and drinking straws
  • ​​​Edit documents on computer screen before printing
  • Create a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system to reduce paper usage whilst sustaining an open line of communication with all prospective, current and past guests
  • Use dispensers in all guest room showers, instead of individual soaps, shampoos and conditioners
  • Recycle shredded documents into Papier Mache for use in entertainment and give balance to local funeral homes and souvenir shops for shipping

Chemicals

  • MSDS must be received from all Chemical Suppliers
  • Usage of Biodegradable/ Eco-friendly products
  • Screening of chemicals to ensure environmentally friendly standards
  • Training of Staff on the proper use, dosage and dilution of all chemicals
  • The installation of dispensing units for all Housekeeping, Kitchen and Laundry chemicals to reduce waste and maintain sustainable standards

Housekeeping

  • Use of towel and linen reuse program in all guestrooms
  • Air Conditioning Units are turned off in rooms, when left on by Guests
  • Bucket is used for washing showers and pipes not left running
  • ​​​Used water must be emptied in drains and not emptied outside
  • All plastic bottles are separated from garbage for recycling

Embracing the Wild

  • Establishing and sustaining the natural wildlife on the property as well as adding interesting features

Community Outreach

  • ​Partnering with selected local schools and community programs to assist in various developmental needs
