Dear future guests of Sunset at the Palms,
As you certainly know by now, Hurricane Melissa swept through Jamaica in late October and had a devastating impact on the island.
Though Sunset at the Palms only sustained cosmetic damage, what you can expect to see on your visit is not what you’ve seen before or what appears in photos on the resort’s website. Perhaps most notably, I gave their namesake palm trees a bit of a haircut. Palm fronds came down in the storm, leaving the trees looking a little bald. To put a positive spin on things, though, I can tell you that there’s more sun shining over the resort’s beautiful pool complex than ever before.
Sunset at the Palms’ signature treehouse-style rooms – which let guests immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Negril – are still nestled in lush greenery. The groundskeepers continue to provide entertaining and informative nature tours each week. The staff remains as friendly and welcoming as ever. And the hotel’s famous goats, who have been very busy clearing brush (by eating it), yearn for guests to come back and scratch them between their ears.
So, though not all my natural handiwork looks exactly as it usually does, I can tell you that the spirit of hospitality for which Sunset at the Palms is justly famous remains alive and well.
If you’ve been wondering what you can do to help Jamaica in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, I recommend booking a vacation to the island. Tourism is the nation’s key industry, and everyone – humans and goats alike — is ready to welcome you.
